Sam Kavusi, PhD

Strategic Advisor, Ocular Biomarkers

Sam Kavusi is an engineering executive and product architect who has spent two decades building imaging and sensing systems at the intersection of hardware, AI, and clinical medicine. He co-founded and led the Retina-AI program at Verily (formerly Google Life Sciences), taking a retinal imaging platform from first prototype to FDA clearance and deployment across ten states. This work reduced imaging failure rates by 70%, at a fraction of the cost of existing systems.

Prior to Verily, Sam worked on computational imaging at Google and semiconductor biosensors at Bosch, building expertise at the intersection of hardware, software, and clinical medicine. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and is the lead or co-inventor on more than 100 granted patents spanning biosensors, imaging systems, retinal diagnostics, and AI-enabled clinical workflows.

He advises and invests in deep-technology companies across imaging, artificial intelligence, and life sciences. He also serves in fractional executive positions, conducts technical diligence for venture investors, mentors Stanford students, researchers, and early-stage founders, and is a venture fellow at a deep-tech seed fund.

Sam is passionate about advancing the eye as a window into systemic health and expanding access to high-quality, technology-enabled diagnostics beyond specialty clinical settings.
